From Adversity to Artistic Rebirth
Scott Tetlow, born in Rochdale in 1969, discovered his love for art at a young age. His teenage years were marked by sketching punks and designing album covers, which eventually led him to Cheltenham University, where he earned his fine art degree.
The Studio Fire and a Shift in Focus
In 2002, tragedy struck when Scott’s beloved studio was destroyed by fire, leading to the loss of all his work. Overwhelmed and unable to continue, he redirected his focus to teaching, believing his art career was over.
A New Beginning in Verona
In 2011, Scott’s fortunes took a turn when he moved his family to Verona and found himself living above an art shop. Inspired by the stunning architecture around him, Scott picked up his brushes once more. This renewed passion led him to return to England and build a studio in his garden, where he has continued painting ever since.
Influence of Chinese Calligraphy
While living in Taiwan, Scott studied calligraphy, which deeply influenced his approach to art. He learned that calligraphy, considered ‘high art,’ expresses both visible aesthetics and the hidden beauty of the soul. This concept of "writing a painting" has significantly impacted Scott's work, encouraging him to create pieces that tell their own stories and convey their own energy.
Artistic Philosophy and Technique
Scott views each drawing as a reflection of his current state of mind. Inspired by Henry Ward Beecher's idea that “Every artist dips his brush in his own soul,” Scott strives to infuse each piece with life and movement. His focus on capturing the essence of his subjects involves understanding and mastering lines and creating the illusion of life. This process requires confidence and spontaneity, as each mark made must flow naturally and cannot be reworked.
