Duncan Palmar RSMA
Renowned Contemporary Painter
Duncan Palmar, born 1964 in Hampshire, has been captivated by painting and drawing since a young age. Recalling his school days, he fondly remembers finding any excuse to spend time in the art room. His early entrepreneurial spirit led him to sell paintings of people’s homes to fund his driving lessons, a testament to his early dedication and creativity.
Early Career and Challenges
Despite his parents' reservations about a career in art, Palmar pursued his passion with determination. At just nineteen, he took a bold leap of faith and became a professional painter, holding his first solo exhibition within the year. This initial success paved the way for a remarkable career.
Artistic Evolution and Success
Palmar’s career has flourished with several sell-out exhibitions and a growing following of collectors and art enthusiasts. Inspired by the Newlyn School of Artists, his work is known for its distinctive representational style, capturing texture, light, and atmosphere with apparent ease. His subjects often include English landscapes and coastal scenes, reflecting his fascination with the sea and its "diverse movements, rhythms, and space."
Current Practice
Today, Palmar works from his studio in Surrey, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to paint every day. "I feel very privileged to paint every day and am determined to continue for as long as I can," he says.
