Colin Brown is a distinguished fine artist renowned for his evocative street scene paintings, inspired by the dynamic interplay of light and atmosphere. With an extensive background in illustration and visualisation, Colin brings a unique perspective to his fine art practice.

Career Background

Colin Brown began his artistic career after completing a four-year course at Canterbury College of Art. Over the next 24 years, he worked as a freelance illustrator and visualiser based in the West Country. His career spanned diverse industries, including advertising, design, and 3D visualisation, with notable clients such as Hasbro, Mattel, Cadbury’s, Saga, and Corgi Toys. Colin was deeply involved in creating detailed visuals for campaigns and projects, often collaborating closely with designers from inception through to final illustration stages. His work also extended into publishing, where he illustrated teaching books, magazines, and posters, and even contributed to The Guinness Book of Records.

Transition to Fine Art

Transitioning from commercial illustration to fine art, Colin now focuses on painting street scenes from around the world. His work is heavily influenced by the Impressionists and Fauvism, characterised by a loose, expressive style that captures the essence of urban landscapes. Colin’s approach emphasises the importance of light and atmosphere, aiming to convey a sense of fleeting moments and dynamic movement within each scene.

Artistic Philosophy and Style

Colin’s artistic philosophy centres around the freedom and fluidity of paint application, avoiding the constraints of excessive detail. He draws inspiration from Monet’s technique of using single strokes of colour to create movement and vitality. Each brushstroke in Colin’s paintings is purposeful, contributing to the overall sense of energy and immediacy.
